When I started translating weekly tips for more than 10 years ago I started with a tip about the ISPF command ONLY to make you aware of its existence even though it had been available for quite some time already then. Now I can repeat history with the ISPF EDIT/VIEW command COLS.
COLS has always been an ISPF EDIT/VIEW line command which produces a so-called ruler showing you the position of data on each line. It is very practical and sometimes indispensable. It just has the disadvantage of following data when you page up or down and thereby disappearing out of sight. Someone luckily complained to IBM and at some time COLS also turned into an EDIT/VIEW primary command. When COLS is used as a primary command the ruler is shown as a line just below the command field. There it stays until you terminate your EDIT/VIEW session or you issue the primary command COLS OFF.
